Exeter Sports Tour 2008

Back in September 2008, girls from years 10, 11, 12 and 13 went on tour with their school Netball and Hockey teams. They had such a great time, they're still talking about it now and wanted to let everyone know by putting up a post on the blog.

We travelled up to Exeter on the Friday afternoon and then stopped at a school to play our netball game against 'Silver Fox's' school. Although it was a very close game, we lost by about 4 goals but still, it was a very good experience. Later on in the evening we went to Pizza Hut and then Hollywood bowl for a fun evening of entertainment and lots of food!
On the saturday, in the early hours of the morning we played a hockey match against a professional team. Unfortunatley we lost 3-0 but still had a fun time in the hot weather and laughing at Miss W, the PE teacher, falling over her own feet!
After our tiring game, we went for a trip to the beach and took lots of pictures, running in and out of the sea and writing our names in the sand. We also all got ourselves a well-deserved ice cream and enjoyed the sun!
In the afternoon, we went for a shopping trip to explore the exeter towns. (This was after Miss B got us horribly lost and had no idea where we were going!)
Later on in the evening we went out for a meal at a fancy reasturant and eat lots of lovely food. We then, watched films together with popcorn and sweets whilst getting our awards that all the teachers awarded us. Some of the awards given were;
Continuously Injured - Katie Caple
Best Hockey Player - Ella Gosling
"Special" Bowler - Lottie Gosling
Princess - Lucy Riggs
and many more...

On sunday morning we all got up bright and early to pack up our bags and get ready to head home. We packed our stuff into the
minibus, just managing to cram it all in.

We headed home with lots of great memories and lots of laughs... It was a trip to remember!

We want to thank the p.e staff for such a fun weekened and we hope that this will happen again!

Superconductors

The guys in the Superconductors group wanted to put up a post telling everybody what it is they do, so here it is:

The Superconductors group is made up of students from years 9-13. We were created so we could learn more about the fascinating experiments involving them and teach others by making a short, educational video. It's difficult to explain what a superconductor is briefly, but it's basically an item that (when combined with a magnet and liquid nitrogen to keep it really cold) can create a strong force that has no resistance and can withstand huge weights. It's easier to explain with a picture:

This 22 stone sumo wrestler is being held in the air, almost like floating, just by the power of the superconductor (amazing isn't it!). The early ideas for the future of them are already being carried out as in Asia they have made a train that runs on superconductors. The idea being that it would give off no emissions as it doesn't need fuel to move because there's no resistance to them (however, when there's no resistance it makes it hard to stop the train!).

The Superconductor group has been on short trips to London and The University of Bristol to shoot some documentary footage and there is one more trip to Siemens still to come! We hope to edit together the video in June and it will be available to future students when studying science.

Learner's Voice

You've seen this name in sections of the blog but the question is: who is Leaner's Voice?

We are a group of students in St. Katherine's school, who originally got together to discuss potential improvements or changes to the teaching styles of the English Department. It was set up to help students have a voice when it came to our education. We went to a workshop in Engineer's House before hosting our own workshop for teachers in school which helped improve the relationship we had with the staff. We then decided to split our group to focus on four key areas of improvement: use of digital technology; communication in the classroom; teaching outside the classroom and lesson observations. As part of the digital technology group, we set up this blog to help students have a voice and opinion. Our future goal, is to be able to make this blog fully accessible to 100% of the students, so that if anybody wanted to write a post they could do so.

Baby Steps

Hello St. Kaths!!!!

This is the first blog of what is hopefully going to be a popular student outlet.

E-mail us if you want your point of view heard or come and find one of the blogging team in school and we'll happily post something for you. You can either tell us some things you want up here and we'll write them up, or you can give us a post (written by hand or on the computer) and we'll just type it up for you :)
